NFC identifiers were in use at Tampere International YÖ-Rogaining orienteering event. Punching, scoring and results were all done with mobile phones using NFC technology.
The control points had NFC tags and QR codes which contestants read their mobile phones app. Punching conveyed this way in real-time forward to the organizers. Orienteering checkpoint has sought a sustainable solution for the mobile conditions in Finland in November, when the controls had to be weather resistant, as well as the reading had to succeed in the dark. These needs NFC tag is a great option because of the plastic identification withstand the weather and there is no need for light in reading. Contestants who used NFC tags had an advantage compared to contestants who red QR codes due much quicker readings.
